Welcome to another episode of Baby Steps with Christ. I'm your host, Leigh Trupin. This is a place where we take small intentional steps in building a relationship with God without religious pressure. Where we get to know God for ourselves without a middleman.

The Pitfall of Relying on People

Today I want to share with you why I always encourage you to build your own relationship with God and to rely on Him rather than on people. Because relying on people only causes confusion. God does not cause confusion.

My daughter wanted to move back to New York. So she began asking the opinion of many on whether or not this was a good idea for her. And she got conflicting answers, but she continued to ask. And when she asked me, I gave her my opinion, but I also advised her that she should pray about it and see what God tells her. And she told me she did, but that she doesn't hear God as clearly as I do.

So I took a moment to pray for her and I asked God to help her hear him more clearly. And he responded to me by saying that he is speaking to her loud and clear, but she's choosing to ignore him.

And let me explain. I learned that my daughter had prayed before I had advised her to. But rather than wait for God's response, she decided that moving back to New York is what she wanted to do. So she started to make it happen. She made all sorts of arrangements to move and she had a date set.

God Speaking Through Circumstances

But between the time that she made up her mind and the day she was going to move, nothing went right. For example, she had planned to fly some stuff out to New York and have it settled there before she drove out. And as she was leaving for the airport on her way out the door, she tripped and twisted her ankle pretty badly. And instead of making it to the airport that day, she was leaving the ER in crutches.

Another big thing that happened, long story short, was the fact that she made arrangements for her dog to move to New York with her. But as it got closer to her move day, it turned out that the dog wouldn't be able to go. And she was conflicted because she wanted to go. But leaving her dog behind wasn't an option for her. So ultimately, she decided not to move.

The Consequences of Moving Ahead of God

And here are her consequences for moving ahead of God. Because she chose to move ahead of God and ignore how He was speaking to her, she was left with no choice but to stay. And she lost all the money that she put into moving. She also lost her apartment and her job because she gave notice to both.

So back to what I was saying about when I prayed for her and asked God to help her hear him more clearly. God used those difficult circumstances as a clear no to her. But what my daughter did instead was listen more to the opinion of what others thought. See, God was very clear in his response, but she isn't mature enough in her relationship with him yet to understand how he speaks to her.

God will speak in your circumstances, but you have to pay attention. This is why it's so important to continue to spend time with him and to build a relationship with him. Not that I am saying that asking others is wrong. I'm saying not to hold what others say over what God says. And don't hold what you want over what God wants for you.

See, I've become an expert in my relationship with God. I'll ask him and I'll wait for his response. I've learned how God speaks to me and how to follow where he leads. And I want everyone to become an expert in their own relationship with God. To become so confident in how God speaks to you that no one can tell you differently.

And I've mentioned this in a previous episode, but I want to reiterate it. Just listening to my episodes does not help you build a relationship with God. That's why I also give free resources to help you grow daily in your relationship with him. I create a free guide for every episode, so make sure you grab a copy. They're designed to help you walk in relationship with him during the week.

So take those baby steps specified in them. And if you're taking advantage of my free guides regularly and they're helping you, I have a study guide on my website where you can dive deeper into your relationship with God. And I also encourage you to grab my book, Dear New Believer Love God. I'll leave all the links in the show notes.

If you've enjoyed this episode today, please share it with someone you know needs to hear it. Let's help others begin building a relationship with God without religious pressure. And like and follow me wherever you listen. Keep taking those baby steps. Thanks for listening. Until next time.
