Welcome to another episode of Baby Steps with Christ. I'm your host, Leigh Trupin. This is a place where we take small baby steps in developing a real, genuine relationship with God without religious pressure. Where we learn to put our relationship with God above all religious expectations, where we go at our own pace, and where we learn we don't need a middleman. We have direct access to God and can go straight to the source.


Today I want to circle back on an episode I already spoke about, tithing. I have to tell you this story because it's really sad that people feel so pressured by religion to tithe. This story is going to piss me off, but it's a clear example how some people feel they need to go to extreme measures to keep their church happy by tithing.


I came across someone who stated they've been attending a specific church and have been tithing regularly to this church for many years. Unfortunately, this person's fallen on some hard times and decided to stop tithing until they got back on their feet. Seems reasonable, right? Well, apparently not to the church. This church made the individual feel so damn guilty for not tithing that he decided to put his monthly expenses on display to justify why he couldn't tithe at the moment.


I was included in this public display, so I saw everything, which quite frankly is none of my business or anyone else's business. I'll be damned if I allow anyone to make me feel this guilty for not being able to give. And I'll be damned if I ever make someone else feel this guilty. What a terrible feeling.


If this person making their monthly expenses to people who had no business knowing his expenses wasn't bad enough, let me tell you what happened next because it's freaking ridiculous. The people who were invited to see this guy's monthly expenses started to suggest what needs to be cut back in order for him to give to the church. Are you freaking kidding me with this crap? I can't with this. I just can't understand the audacity of these people telling him what he needs to cut back on in order to give to the church.
Now, this obviously wasn't my response to him. I told him I was more concerned about the church making him feel like he needs to post his monthly expenses to justify why he couldn't give. And I expressed my disappointment in the responses to those so-called financial advisors. Now, I can't tell you what the outcome was because I didn't hear back from him. But again, are you freaking kidding me?


If you've listened to my previous message about tithing, you know that God was leading me to give financially, not by giving to the church, but by giving to people. Right now, my daughter fell on some hard times, so I'm helping her get back on her feet financially and emotionally. If you've heard my last episode on tithing, I mentioned that God also leads us to give with our time. And right now, God is leading me to spend my time, money, and energy on my ministry.


The fact that I stopped giving elsewhere right now and started focusing on my daughter and my ministry doesn't make me feel guilty at all. What I give, who I give it to, and whether it's my time or my money is between God and me, no one else. And the same is true for you.


I said it in my last episode, and I'll reiterate it in this episode. Tithing is not mandatory. However, God wants you to spend your money, if he's asking you to spend it at all, is between you and him. That's why it's so important that you learn to develop a relationship with God and learn how he speaks to you. You should become so confident in your relationship with him that no one can tell you how he's working in you.
